On their return from Japan in 1989, he and Mary purchased the Whisper, a Cal-35 in Huntington Harbor on Long Island. They cruised her up the inland waterway to Lake Champlain and sailed for a number of years in that area. In 1991 Owen qualified for and was scheduled to take the Coast Guard's examination for his master's license. At that time business got in the way and, not needing it professionally, decided not to pursue the license.
